Sustainable Shopping Reminder: Buy Less, Buy Better

Here is a question worth asking before your next checkout: where did this come from, and how long will it stay with me?

It is October, a month recognised around the world for environmental awareness, climate action and green innovation, and we think it is the perfect moment for a gentle shopping reminder. This is especially important as we gear up for Christmas shopping. Fashion is responsible for around 10% of global carbon emissions, which is more than international flights and shipping combined. That number can feel huge, but the way we shop is one of the few parts of it that sits in our own hands.

Make Your Mark With Patricia

That is also why our conversation with Patricia Estridge, on World Environment Day, felt so close to home. Patricia is a marine ecologist and the CEO and co-founder of SeaGen, a company using smart robotics to protect and restore oceans, rivers and lakes. Their robots remove pollutants and support the growth of beneficial species like seaweed, helping underwater ecosystems regenerate every single day. Seaweed and kelp are a big part of the carbon story too, which makes her work a lovely reminder that care for nature can be practical and powerful.

How We Make Silk That Lasts

The most sustainable piece is usually the one that lasts. Before you add to basket, ask yourself whether you will still reach for it next year. Quality silk, thoughtful design and a good repair service all stretch the life of what you own. That is why every Paradisefold piece comes with free lifetime care and repairs, so your Fold, Turban, Pillowcase or Cloud stays with you for years, not seasons.

It starts with the silk itself. Our pieces are made from Grade 6A, 19 momme mulberry silk, a high quality silk that is built to keep its softness and feel for years. Whether it is a Fold, Turban, Pillowcase or Cloud, each one is designed to be worn and loved night after night, not worn once and forgotten.

Then there is who makes it. Every piece is handmade in London, in vetted factories we have built long-term partnerships with. We get to meet the people who make our pieces, and that care shows up in the finish. Even our elastic, boxes and tissue paper are made in the UK, so there are fewer miles and fewer weak links between the silk and your pillow.

We also make in limited edition runs, which means we make what we believe people will love, rather than piling up stock that never finds a home. It is a slower, quieter way to work, but it is better for the planet and better for the product.

Look at the Whole Journey

Carbon does not only come from the factory. It comes from fabric, packaging, shipping and every mile in between. At Paradisefold we measure our emissions from production all the way to your doorstep, then invest in removing twice as much as we emit. You can read exactly how we do it in our full carbon report, including the removal projects we support, from forestation to ocean kelp forests.

A Simple Checklist for Your Next Purchase

  • Will I wear or use this for years?
  • Is it made to be repaired, not replaced?
  • Does the brand measure and take responsibility for its carbon?
  • Can I find out how it was made?

Small questions, big ripple. If you would like to know more about how we work, visit our Sustainability page, or start with the one piece that could replace all the others in your routine, the Fold.
