Beating the September rush: simple ways to beat the post-summer blues
September can feel like an overwhelming month. As work ramps up, new terms begin and the change in weather signals the end of summer, the shift in tempo can be jarring, and it can often affect our mood.
The good news is that there are some small steps we can take to make this transition month easier on our bodies and our minds. In this month’s blog, we’re sharing three essential tips that our team uses to help manage time, energy and stress levels, so we can tackle each day without feeling burnt out, in the run-up to winter.
Step 1, prioritise rest and good sleep
It’s tempting to dive straight into productivity mode as the holidays end, but maintaining regular sleeping habits is crucial to maintaining energy levels, attention and productivity. Poor sleep can negatively affect mood, make us more prone to anxiety, and reduce our ability to focus. Aim to get seven to 10 hours of sleep a night, and it’ll pay back in spades in terms of attention, ability to cope with stress and reduced irritability.
If you struggle with sleep, experts recommend creating a short bedtime routine to help you wind down. I particularly enjoy the routine of removing makeup and drinking something warm before bedtime. I try (and often fail) to avoid my phone, but I always know that once I wear my Paradisefold cloudy silk sleep mask, that’s my mind’s trigger to fall asleep.
Step 2, notice the small stuff
In the midst of the September rush, it can be easy to overlook life’s little pleasures. According to research published by the Harvard Business Review, focussing on the present and appreciating small wins can significantly improve mental health and productivity. Trying to be mindful, and by that we mean being present and fully engaged in the moment, happiness levels and allows us to recharge, which contributes to more sustainable productivity.
Simple things like savouring a morning coffee or taking a few deep breaths during a break can help ground us and enhance overall well-being. Being fairly time-pressed, our Creative Director feels happiest when I make time for short and regular outdoor breathers that are purely personal. Her favourite time of day is sitting with her breakfast in her backyard (or looking out at it - depending on the weather!) enjoying nature and getting some ‘me-time’ before the chaos of the day.
Step 3, build shortcuts and say ‘no’!
September doesn’t have to feel chaotic, and sometimes, it’s great to take shortcuts! Small actions, such as asking for help, saying ‘no’, and even optimising routines are key to helping us stay sane throughout the year.
By streamlining tasks–or taking them off the list–we can all free up time for the activities we love and reduce decision fatigue. These small hacks not only save time but also create a sense of control over the day, leaving us with more mental space for important / meaningful tasks.
I’m still learning to say ‘no’! But while I do, I know that my Paradisefold Turbans and Folds do the heavy lifting to save my time caring for my hair!
Conclusion
September may be a busy month, but with three simple tweaks to a daily routine, we can more effectively manage our energy levels, time and stress, to avoid burnout. Whether it’s taking a few moments to appreciate a peaceful cup of tea or simplifying your morning routine with a simple hair and skin care, these small habits can make a big difference in how you manage your energy and stress levels. Here’s to a balanced and thriving September!
Big love,
Manal, Paradisefold 💚
