"Making a difference is important, but it’s not a race…”
We all know that in recent weeks, the UK has been unsettled by far-right rioters driven by racism and Islamophobia. This is a stark reminder that even in a country as open as ours, hatred and fear of difference remain a challenge.
Although our hometown of London has been largely safe, these riots have spread fear across racialised / political minorities. They have affected our team and community personally.
At its core, fashion is about presenting ourselves in the world in a way that is true to ourselves. Yet, fashion can also often prioritise fitting in and confirming to a narrow definition of beauty rather than flourishing because the richness of our racial and religious differences.
At Paradisefold, we believe in the importance of personal growth. In the face of fear and division, we are firm in our commitment to break barriers and bridge, rather than divide.
That’s why, this month in our August blog, we’re speaking to Flourish in Diversity. Flourish are a charity that help racialised youth and youth from from low socio-economic backgrounds to pursue careers in fashion. Fashion is massively behind the curve on diversity, so Nishy and Emelia discuss how they are working to make a difference. We cover team work, ambitions, racism and the Met Gala.
