Marking Black History Month

This October, we mark Black History Month, a month close to our hearts: it's an important milestone to reflect on how far we've come and the work left to do to create a fair and equal future for black and racialised women and men in our communities.💕
As a brand that values diversity, we know that this month isn’t just about honouring the past; it’s also about recognising the individuals who are shaping the present and future. That's why today we're sharing our Make Your Mark episode with Paradisefold Insider, Juanita Ingram.
Juanita is a lawyer, entrepreneur, and Founder of Dress for Success Greater London, a charity that helps women gain economic independence. On top of all of this, Juanita is also the first Black Woman to win Mrs Universe. 👑 We discuss her work, the link between hair and identity for women of colour, and the highs and lows of her career.
“It took me 11 months and 44 job applications to find my next role,” Juanita recalls. “I know exactly what it feels like to want to work, but not be able to.” Her personal struggle fuelled her passion for supporting women in similar situations, leading her to say yes when the worldwide CEO of Dress for Success reached out and asked her to restart the London affiliate.
Juanita and Dress for Success work to shift this narrative by empowering women to embrace their full selves, including their natural hair. This challenge is something many Black women face in the workplace, where societal standards of “good hair” can often exclude textured and natural styles. Juanita’s leadership helps break down these barriers, encouraging women to bring their authentic selves into their professional lives.
Juanita emphasizes the importance of surrounding yourself with people who “speak life into your situation.” This sense of community and encouragement is a cornerstone of her work, as she knows first-hand how important it is to have a network that helps you stay grounded and confident during uncertain times.
This month and every month, we celebrate women like Juanita Ingram—pioneers who are making a tangible difference in the lives of women around the world. 💚
