Born from frustration
The Fold began with two school friends, Andrea and Debra, who were fed up with the range and quality of hair wraps on offer. Nothing looked good and made a real difference to their hair. So Andrea set out to create one that did both.
Andrea had spent over a decade in international development, working in conflict states across South East Asia, the Middle East and Europe, before turning to fashion. There, she found a market of extremes: frumpy or hyper-sexualised, fast or forgettable. She wanted pieces that were beautiful and purposeful, elegant without trying too hard. They didn’t exist, so she made them.
We didn’t design the Fold alone. We tested and refined it with women across the UK and US, with every type and condition of hair, from hair loss to the most voluminous coils. We still co-create every collection with our community, and handmake everything in our London studio. Today, Paradisefold is a friend-and-family-led brand, built for purpose-led, time-poor women who want to feel effortlessly world-ready, every day. Is it really silk?
You spend around eight hours a night with your hair wrapped in it, so you deserve to know exactly what it is. When it comes to silk vs satin for hair, here’s a secret the industry doesn’t shout about: satin isn’t silk. Satin is a weave, and it’s very often made from polyester. It may look shiny, but it doesn’t treat your hair the way real silk does. So, is silk or satin better for hair? Real silk, every time. What momme is best for hair? Why we chose two layers of 19 momme mulberry silk
The Fold uses two full metres of silk, double-lined, so there’s silk on silk wherever your hair touches it. Momme is how silk is weighed, a little like thread count for cotton. We chose 19 momme deliberately. Two layers of it give your hair real protection without ever feeling clammy: with the adjustable wrap wrap design, the bias-cut 19 momme silk moulds around your face and hair when you tie it up, so it feels light,c comfortable, and stays put all night.
Weight matters for fit, too. The Fold is cut on the bias and comes in one adjustable size, so we want the silk to mould softly to your face and hair and stay comfortable all night. A heavier fabric is more rigid; it sits on your head rather than wrapping around it.
Why does real silk matter so much? Cotton and rough fabrics pull moisture from your strands and create friction every time you turn over. How to tie a silk hair wrap, the Fold way
- Place the Fold over your head and hair, keeping the elastic at the back of your neck.
- Pull the Fold up, encasing all of your hair, and twist away the excess fabric.
- Seal the Fold and thread the ties through the Paradisefold tag loop to control the tightness. Make sure the tag loop covers your roots.
- Tie in a bow, front or back, however you like it.
For a bandanna, pull the Fold over your head and forehead, fold over the bulk of the fabric, and secure with a bow.
